Steve Maxwell is one of the most respected American fitness coaches. His holistic approach is what makes him unique. Black belt Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and American Master of Russian Kettlebell; travels around the world to teach and coach about Breathe Techniques, Mobility Conditioning, BJJ and Strength.
Last weekend I had the privilege to interview Steve Maxwell before coaching a private workshop called BECOME A BETTER ATHLETE.
We met up in his beautiful Airbnb and I felt instantly a light energy around him. Immediately we setup the lighting and we started chatting about his life, life philosophy and coaching. All was live in my Instagram.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING FOR THE US GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
I worked with different agencies teaching how to handle people bringing them into custody. I worked with city police and park rangers giving seminars and coaching the head police. Most of them are not well trained in taking down dangerous people. I coached them Brazilian Jiu-Juitsu techniques.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR RECENT WORKSHOP BECOME A BETTER ATHLETE IN VIENA?
We will learn how to breath while training and competing.
WHAT KIND OF TECHNIQUES?
There are a collection of BJJ, Russian Sistema, Qi-gong and Pranayama.
Avoid injuries and have a healthy longevity- Steve Maxwell philosophy
HOW TO BECOME A BETTER ATHLETE?
To become a better athlete every look after training and nutrition but rarely about breathing.
Choose a diet that you can keep for the rest of your life- Steve Maxwell philosophy
Ask yourself this: How do you want to age? Diet, have a natural hygiene, move and sleep. That simple.
I use the 80/20 formula which is eat until is enough and eat mindfully. Most of the guys eat very fast and without thinking. I always tell my students to slow down and eat with awareness.
We have to be responsible with our health. Nowadays, a small percentage of the population is aware and responsible for their own health, now they leave it to the Health Institutions but what do they know? We gave up for modern health. Doctors might know how to deal with illness but do know less about health prevention.
You have to know yourself -Steve Maxwell
HOW YOUR DIET LOOKS LIKE NOWADAYS?
I eat three meals a day sometimes two depending in what I am doing. No snacks and when I want a snack I make it a meal. I normally wait 5 hours in between meals. I do not mix bread and meat, bread and cheese, so, no pizza, beens and rice, beens and meat. I take the carbs from the fruits and the vegetables.
IS KETTLEBELL TRAINING ENOUGH FOR AN ATHLETE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN HIS/HER CHOSEN SPORT?
It depends on his/her sport. Everything that makes the athlete stronger is good. Dumbbell, Kettlebells,Barbells, Machines and/or Bodyweight training.
But answering the question, YES, it is enough.
Strength training + Sport
Choose carefully and be aware of your joints and the real benefit for the sport.
ABOUT LIVING THE NOMADIC LIFE?
I start living a nomadic life back in America when I went broke and start living and driving around the country to give workshops. Later on I was traveling around the world and this has been my life. I cant stay for more than 3 weeks in one place. I travel with a backpack. When I find something I like I buy it but I let go something.
Disclosure; Steve’s Interview in this post was based in the main notes I took while being Live on Instagram because I did’t push play to recorder in my camera.
